Ohio Judge Shot Outside The Courtroom, 1 Suspect Killed Another in Custody

Ohio judge wounded in courthouse shooting, suspect killed

An Ohio judge was shot Monday morning, August 21, at the courthouse where he works, said an official. He was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital, where he was undergoing surgery.

The courthouse was closed for the day as local and state authorities helped to secure the scene.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said at a press conference that the probation officer fired the shots that killed the alleged shooter, whose name has not been released.

The second person in the vehicle is not considered a suspect or an accomplice, Abdalla said, and told authorities that the shooter had only said he had to be in court Monday morning.

Neither the suspected shooter nor his suspected accomplice were immediately identified. "I'd say he was the intended target".

Authorities say Judge Joseph Bruzzese (bruh-ZEEZ') Jr. was shot Monday morning near the courthouse in Steubenville (STOO'-behn-vihl) roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh.

"It just hurts", Abdalla said.

Officials believe the probation officer hit the suspect.

Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis tells our NBC affiliate WTOV that Bruzzese was talking after being wounded.

This morning, Steubenville Police requested the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to investigate a shooting incident outside the Jefferson County Courthouse in Steubenville, in which Common Pleas Judge Joseph J. Bruzzese, Jr. was injured.

The other man who was seen on video in the suspect's vehicle is not being treated as a suspect at this time.
