Eight people injured following knife attack in Russia

Scene of attack

Russia's Investigations Committee have said they launched a probe into the horror that unfolded about 11.20am local time - with ISIS since having claimed that it was responsible for the attack.

Russia's Investigative Committee's representative Svetlana Petrenko said that the investigation expects further information on the accused, including regarding possible mental disorders.

It comes after two people were killed and eight injured Friday in a stabbing attack in the Finnish city of Turku.

The police were treating the incident as an "attempted murder", officials said on Saturday, adding that seven people were injured during the rampage in Surgut.

"The theory that the attack was an act of terrorism is not the main one", the regional department of the Russian Interior Ministry said.

Attack in Barcelona

Video posted by Izvestia newspaper on its website on Sunday showed the attacker, a slim young man, lying on the ground dressed all in black with a red object taped round his waist.

The man, named locally as 19-year-old Artur Gadzhiev, was gunned down by cops after going on a horrific stabbing spree in Surgut on Saturday.

None of the victims have died - however two are in a serious condition. The report said one woman was stabbed while standing at an ATM.

The city of Surgut lies 2,100 kilometres (1,330 miles) northeast of Moscow.

The Islamic State group had also claimed the responsibility for the deadly attack in Spain.
