Ex-NU professor charged in River North murder waives extradition

Detectives have ruled out a love triangle between an Oxford University employee, a U.S. professor and their alleged murder victim, who was found with more than 40 stab wounds, police have said.

Cornell-Duranleau, a 26-year-old hair stylist, had been asleep in Lathem's condo when the professor let Warren in, according to Toller's account.

Andrew Warren and Wyndham Lathem wanted to murder someone before killing themselves to realise a sexual fantasy they both shared.

Lathem, a professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, was sacked after the allegations, according to the Chicago Tribune. A cosmetologist at a local salon, Cornell-Duranleau is believed to have had some sort of relationship with Lathem.

Detectives spoke with witnesses who said they heard "what sounded like a fight and screaming" at around 5 a.m. that morning.

The men showered, then fled, prosecutors said, finally turning themselves over to authorities in the Bay Area nine days after the slaying.

Cornell-Duranleau, a native of Corunna, Mich., worked as a hairstylist after earning his cosmetology license in Holland, Mich., according to an obituary posted by his family. Lathem instructed Warren to record cellphone video of what would happen next, Toller said, though for some reason Warren never did. He had been stabbed 47 times in his back, chest, shoulder and abdomen.

Cornell-Duranleau last words were, "Wyndham, what are you doing?"

Wyndham Lathem, 43, and Andrew Warren, 56, were extradited from northern California - where they surrendered on August 4 after an eight-day, nationwide manhunt - to Chicago early Saturday.

"I can only describe the course of events that lead up to Mr. (Cornell-Duranleau)'s murder as unquestionably tragic", Johnson said. Lathem also anonymously called the front desk of his apartment building to say that someone should check his room as a crime had been committed there.

At the Sunday court hearing, Lathem attorney, Barry Sheppard, gave the judge letters from the former professor's friends and colleagues that touted his academic and research accomplishments. "It was a little bit more dark and disturbing", Chicago police Detective Cmdr.

An autopsy found Cornell-Duranleau died of multiple sharp force injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, and his death was ruled a homicide. He also admitted Cornell-Duranleau "trusted him completely and felt safe with him but he betrayed that trust". They planned for Lathem to choose people to kill, she said.
