Terrorist attack in Barcelona killed 13 and injured more than 100 on Thursday
On a poignant night in Barcelona following the tragic events that took place during the week, those lining out in the iconic blue and red against Real Betis did so with Barcelona on the back of their shirts as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives, and to the grieving city as a whole.
Liga title holders Real Madrid were starting their campaign later on Sunday at Deportivo La Coruna. They need a win in a bad way to boost their spirits, and they're hoping that they can get exactly that against Real Betis. They have also signed Tottenham Hotspurs midfielder Paulinho, but the transfer has been last minute meaning it may take a little time for the Brazilian player to settle into the scheme of things.
Zidane made four changes from the side that completed a 5-1 aggregate hammering of Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday.
FC Barcelona, a professional football club based in Barcelona, will open their season at home against Betis at the football stadium of Camp Nou at 8:15 p.m. (1915 GMT) on Sunday and the game will kick off under strict security measures. "This victory is for those affected".
There was a solemn feeling at the Nou Camp before and during the game with only 56,480 supporters at the 99,000-capacity arena.
On the field, Valverde's reign got off to a hard start with a 5-1 aggregate thrashing in the Spanish Super Cup at the hands of rivals Real Madrid.
"Their money was refunded to everyone, the circumstances are special and understandable", said a club spokesman.
The Catalan club also showed their support for those affected by the attack on Friday morning, with players and staff standing in a semi-circle at the club's training ground while holding a minute's silence.
With the mayor of Cambrils Cami Mendoza and chiefs of Catalonia's regional police force among those watching on, captain Lionel Messi led by example with Deolofeu and Paco Alcacer struggling to fill Suarez and Neymar's shoes up front.
A stern defensive showing from Betis was eventually broken in the 36th minute, though, when Gerard Deulofeu's low cross received the slightest of touches from defender Alin Tosca, leaving Antonio Adan with no chance in the away side's goal.
The Blaugrana doubled their lead soon after as Sergi Roberto stabbed one into the back of the net from close range to net his first ever La Liga goal.
