Iran Engaging in Game of Brinkmanship, Unlikely to Withdraw From Nuclear Deal

Iran sees banking channels opening up

If Washington continues with "threats and sanctions" against Iran, Mr. Rouhani said in Parliament on Tuesday, Tehran could easily restart the nuclear programme.

President Hassan Rouhani, in an address to the Iranian Parliament on Tuesday, warned that Tehran could exit the nuclear deal "in hours" if the United States continued expanding sanctions.

The landmark agreement was reached in 2015 between Iran, United Stated and other world powers, who lifted several economic sanctions in exchange for Iran to limit its nuclear activities.

"Iran, under no circumstances, can ever be allowed to have nuclear weapons", she said in a statement.

New sanctions approved by Congress this month penalized Iran for its ballistic missile program and other activities in the region.

"The new administration of the United States must comply with its obligations under the JCPOA", the researcher suggested. "It was Iran's preference, but it was not and will not remain Iran's only option".

The other parties to the nuclear deal - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - disagree with Trump, saying that Iran is not in violation of the pact, which is overseen by the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Iran had been tied down by sanctions for a long time, but under Barack Obama's presidency an agreement was signed in 2015.

Trump said last week he did not believe that Iran was living up to the spirit of the nuclear deal.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday that Guterres considers the accord "to be one of the utmost diplomatic achievements in our collective search for peace and security - and we need to do whatever we can to preserve it".

While acknowledging that the test was "not a direct violation" of the nuclear agreement, it imposed sanctions on 25 individuals and entities connected to its missile programme and the powerful Revolutionary Guards force.

"Iran, I think, is very unlikely to withdraw from the deal". Governors from the Central Bank of Iran met last month with representatives from the International Monetary Fund to discuss lingering capital issues and the USA government a year ago lifted some restrictions.

The expert said the USA and Iran appeared to be "engaging in a game of brinkmanship".

He recommended the USA to be realistic about Iran's "unmatched role in fighting terrorism in the Middle East".
