The Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Ryan Tannehill on injured reserve with a left knee injury, sidelining him for the entire season. That effectively ends the season for the Dolphins quarterback, leaving recent addition Jay Cutler as Miami's likely starter for 2017. The Dolphins 29-year-old quarterback is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in 2018.

"It was tougher for me because it's more and more real", Gase said.

Tannehill chose to avoid surgery after last season's injury. It's an extremely unfortunate turn of events for Tannehill, who many in the Dolphins organization believed was poised for a big season.

The Texas A&M product went down with sprained ligaments in the same knee he injured last week resulting in the surgery he'll undergo to fix his ACL. Their worst fears were realized and a week later he has decided the best course of action is reconstructive surgery sometime this week, a decision he should have made last season instead of stem cell therapy and rehab, but hindsight is 20/20. As with Cutler, Tannehill had enjoyed his best season under the tutelage of Gase, who was hired by Miami a year ago.

Tannehill was coming off a career-year in his first season under Gase, completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 2,995 yards.

Tannehill will have surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a person familiar with the decision said Friday.
