Spain sees record number of migrant arrivals in 2017

Migrants don't usually disembark on Spanish beaches but it has happened before, especially near the cities Melilla and Ceuta, which border Morocco.

Southern Spain is already struggling to control shipments of arms, drugs, and illegal tobacco into Spain from Morocco in an increasingly violent trade, with police saying the gangsters are now "winning nearly all the battles".

"It's important that more alternative legal pathways are established to avoid that people come to Europe, to Spain through these unsafe ways, to avoid people risking their lives at the sea", Otero said.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) - incorporated into the United Nations system in late 2016 - says the number of migrants arriving in Spain is three times higher than it was this time a year ago.

"It's possible that Spain will outperform Greece this year", he added. Despite Spain's increase, migration across Europe is down overall when juxtaposed with last year's numbers.

Some of the migrants who stormed the border are seen in the video below celebrating their success in making it to European Union soil.

Numerous group were collected in vehicles after landing, according to the paper.

Zahara de los Atunes is one of the southernmost parts of Spain: The beach, popular with tourists and known for its tuna, is less than eight miles from the coast of North Africa.

Before waves of refugees and migrants started pouring into Europe via the Mediterranean two years ago, simple wooden boats arrived in Spain regularly starting in the early 1990s.

IOM figures showed that 121 migrant deaths were registered along the Spanish route in 2017, while Italy saw 96,861 arrivals in the same period, with 2,242 deaths registered on that route. It seems like it is safer to go through Morocco to Spain than through Libya. The number of sailings peaked in 2006 after Spain made loan and investment deals with several countries.

Due to good weather conditions, Spain has seen an increase in attempts by migrants to reach its shores over the past few weeks.
