August warmth continues through the end of the week
However, since meteor showers are unlikely to be seen during the day, they will be visible during the pre-dawn hours of the 11th, 12th, and 13th. Plus, the moon is still quite bright, coming out of full moon August 7th.
The International Space Station (ISS) - if you live in or are close to the United Kingdom you will be in for a treat during the Perseid meteor shower in 2013 as the International Space Station is visible over United Kingdom skies.
The moon was full on August 7 and will have waned to approximately 80 percent illumination by Saturday.
On this night, the moon will be around three-quarters full, making it trickier to spot the shower in the sky.
Visibility should still be very good the following night (12-13) but it is Friday night into Saturday morning at which it will be best. According to the International Meteor Organization (IMO), a bright moon can obstruct the shower and this year, the moon will have waned to around 80% illumination by 12 August. In a normal year you might see 50-75 meteors per hour in a rural location. With a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Friday night, it looks like Saturday night (partly cloudy) will provide the best chance to see some of the meteors streaking across the sky. You won't need any fancy equipment to spectate this wonderful astrological event as the naked eye is the best choice to view the meteor shower.
For anyone planning to watch the Perseid meteor showerthis weekend, the forecast holds some bad news. It can take them 30 minutes to adjust, and make sure you are able to see lots of sky. "This bright moon will obliterate all but the brightest Perseid meteors". To see how those meteoroids moved in space before entering Earth's atmosphere, check out this website showing the latest data collected by NASA's Cameras for Allsky Meteor Surveillance (CAMS) project.
The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, in the north sky beneath the more recognizable "W" of Cassiopeia. The meteors are actually tiny dust and particles from the tail of the comet as it orbits around the sun. To put that in perspective, if you traveled from Omaha to Lincoln at the speed of a meteor you'd arrive in 1.5 seconds.
Comet Swift-Tuttle has been well documented each time it has come close to Earth.
