Microsoft Surface Devices Fail Consumer Reports Reliability Tests

Consumer Reports pulled its coveted "recommended" imprimatur from all Microsoft laptops and tablets, including the Surface and Surface Book, saying the line up suffered from excessive reliability problems. The study ultimately came to the conclusion that 25 percent of MicrosoftSurface devices encounter hardware problems by the end of the second year of ownership.
But the biggest threat to Surface devices has been the problems faced by some consumers like freezes, a particular hardware not responding, touch issues etc as these issues affect the reliability. It also claims it can not recommend Microsoft devices with detachable keyboards (ie, the June Surface Pro) or clamshell Surface laptops.
Microsoftsaid in a statement that it doesn't "believe these findings accurately reflect Surface owners' true experiences".
Though it shouldn't go down without a fight, Microsoft is up against some pretty stiff competition with this Consumer Reports study.
"Consumers tell us that reliability is a major factor when they're choosing a tablet or laptop", says Simon Slater, Consumer Reports' survey manager. "Microsoft's real-world return and support rates for past models differ significantly from Consumer Reports' breakage predictability", a spokesperson said. The decision particularly impacts the latest Microsoft Surface Laptop and the Surface Book, which the reviews organization had initially awarded its coveted "recommended" designation.
Not that numerous 90,000 surveyed were Surface owners, it would seem. On the same front, Apple also led other tech companies in the same Consumer Reports survey, posting a two-year breakage rate among survey respondents of only 10 percent. Based purely on lab performance, the Surface Pro is highly rated when used either as a tablet or with a keyboard attached.
This motion includes both the brand new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices launched mere months ago.
But "it's not great" news since reliability "is one of the key elements" of systems, he added. Within the Surface product family, Microsoft also sells the Surface Laptop, which features a traditional clamshell laptop design.
