Strong safety Kam Chancellor and Seahawks agree to contract extension

The Seahawks know how serious Chancellor can be when it comes to contract demands as he held out through training camp and the first two games of the 2015 season while seeking a new deal. That last piece may be resolved sooner rather than later. Almost one year ago, Chancellor reflected on the lessons he learned from the holdout.

Two years ago, Kam Chancellor staged a holdout about nothing.

The $12 million average of the three-year extension, based on new money, would make Chancellor the third-highest paid Seahawk behind quarterback Russell Wilson and cornerback Richard Sherman.

Chancellor, 29, has been Seattle's starting strong safety since 2011 and one of the key locker room leaders.

Earl Thomas and Chancellor are arguably the most important pieces in Seattle's defense.

"Hopefully it'll get done any time now", said Kam Chancellor, via Sheil Kapadia of ESPN.com. "I'm a positive guy, just keep it on the positive end on both sides".

"I love this team", he said. The guaranteed total of $25 million also ranks among the top among safeties (Jones got $33 million as part of a four-year, $48 million contract signed last March generally regarded as setting something of a floor for Chancellor).

"I really don't like to put no negatives in my head", he said. Yet, even with those injuries, Chancellor is still a valuable member of the Seahawks' secondary and defensive unit as a whole, resulting in the team making the decision to sign him to a new deal. They were torched by Matt Ryan during the NFC Divisional Playoff round and gave up 338 yards and three touchdowns.

"I love this team".
