Caeleb Dressel, Nathan Adrian, Mallory Comerford and Simone Manuel competed in the final and took gold for the USA with a new world record, 3 minutes, 19.60 seconds.

This timing is 0.44sec off his Olympic record of 50.39sec, set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil past year, as American Caeleb Dressel won in phenomenal fashion, clocking 49.86sec to come within 0.04sec of compatriot Michael Phelps' world record of 49.82sec set with a supersuit in the 2009 edition.

Townley Haas earned a second relay gold medal while Joseph Schooling won a bronze medal at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary Saturday. "But I'm not the same person as Michael [Phelps]".

Dressel touched 0.26 seconds outside Michael Phelp's world record set at the 2009 championships and 1.01 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, Piero Codia of Italy.

The Netherlands took silver at 2.21 seconds back while Canada claimed bronze at 3.95.

The current MHSAA state record holder in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle, Comerford was part of another American gold medal group, swimming the second leg of the USA women's 800 relay team, which defeated runner-up China by more than one second.

He took home two individual golds in the 50m free and 100m fly and finished with a relay gold in the 4x100m free relay.

The 20-year-old American is expected to notch a record seventh gold as part of the men's 4x100m medley relay on the final night.

Despite beating her national-championship time of 52.81, Comerford (52.77) took fourth in the event behind Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom (52.31) and Denmark's Pernille Blume (52.69).

His haul overshadows even compatriot and freestyle queen Katie Ledecky, who leaves Budapest with five golds and a silver.

Still three weeks shy of his 21st birthday, he could have many years more to shine in the sprint disciplines, where careers are often measured in decades.

Dressel's relay team-mates paid tribute to his jaw-dropping performances.

"It's unheard of until now - everything is impossible until someone does it".

"The comparisons are probably inevitable".

"Caleb's just been phenomenal - he's just had an fantastic meet", said Schooling. "He is trained for it, it that's how we all have our successes".

"He is the one to beat, and he came back and worked real hard, and he'll, regrettably, keep working hard".

Dressel has also staked a strong claim for worldwide honors as world swimmer of the year, an award largely dominated by Phelps and Lochte for much of the last decade.

Comerford said she was grateful her US coaches believed in her enough to select her for the race's opening leg in a field full of record holders and Olympic medalists.
