BJP Chief Amit Shah To Contest August 8 Rajya Sabha Polls From Gujarat

It may be recalled that Patel is already part of the Rajya Sabha, and if he wins this time also, he will become a Rajya Sabha member for the fifth time.

Even after becoming the party president in 2014, Shah had retained his Naranpura MLA seat and had even attended assembly session on March 30 which was reportedly after a gap of two years.

Shah will leave for the state today and is likely to file his nomination on Friday. This has given new speculations that BJP might field a third candidate from the state and if that happens, the veteran Congress leader, Ahmed Patel might have to face tough competition. Given the trouble in Gujarat Congress, symbolised by the resignation by leader of opposition Shankar Singh Vaghela and cross voting by Congress MLAs during the recent presidential election, the BJP is hopeful that it can also win the third seat, now held by Patel.

Their names were announced by senior party leader J P Nadda after the meeting of the party panel.

The retirement of Ahmed Patel (Cong), Dilipbhai Pandya (BJP) and Irani (BJP) - all from Gujarat - is due on August 18. "The way BJP is getting support from every quarter and Congress MLAs are joining the BJP shows the trust of the people in PM Narendra Modi leadership".

Irani is contesting for her second Rajya Sabha term from Gujarat.

The parliamentary board also named Sampatiya Uikey, a tribal leaderfrom Madhya Pradesh, for the by-poll being held following the death of Anil Madhav Dave.

As many as 9 Rajya Sabha members will see their term ending in August.
