HTC Vive, Qualcomm Reveal Snapdragon 835-Powered Standalone VR HMD For The Chinese Market
This morning at the ChinaJoy expo, HTC is announcing their first shipping VIVE standalone VR headset, specifically for the Chinese market. For those of you who don't know what Viveport is, it is HTC VIVE's content platform, app store, and subscription service where customers can explore, create, connect, and experience the VR content. The Chinese variant of the standalone headset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor which is more than capable enough of powering decent VR experiences as we found out when we went hands-on with Qualcomm's standalone VR headset in 2016. After successfully introducing one of the industry's first complete VR systems last year, the company this year revealed additional peripherals and accessories, including the Vive Tracker universal tracking device and the TPCast wireless upgrade. As previously announced, the headset won't require a phone or PC in order to work, and will instead be powered by Qualcomm's mobile-based Snapdragon 835 chipset. We do know that the Chinese version lacks the GoogleWorldSense tech that the standalone coming to the United States will boast. For another, these VR headsets keep us tethered to desks or, at the very least, laptops. Crisis Action VR offers compatibility with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and keyboard-and-mouse control options, so players are able to kill zombies or fight against real people using whatever tools they prefer. Whereas the USA version will use Google's WorldSense technology which utilizes six degrees of freedom (6DoF) for head-tracking, Qualcomm's could support only three degrees of freedom (3DoF), which is what mobile VR headsets like the Samsung Gear VR now use.
"China is the leading mobile market in the world today, and has the momentum to lead the global VR market as well", HTC Vive executive Alvin W. Graylin said in a statement, according to TechCrunch. The Viveport platform was introduced by HTC sometime past year and offers consumers with the option of streaming VR-content at their convenience.
