Six policemen, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), were injured when the Army soldiers allegedly thrashed them after being stopped at a check-post in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal.
Meanwhile, Jammu Kashmir Police issued a statement in this regard that reads: "During intervening night of 21/22-07-2017 a group of above 30 personnel of 24 RR in civvies travelling in 04 different vehicles escaped forcibly from the NAkA point established by police station Sonmarg at Poney Stand".
The Army men were returning from Amarnath but were travelling beyond cut off time as per which all Srinagar-bound vehicles have to cross Sonamarg which is about 80-km north of Srinagar and 13.5 km short of Baltal by 2 pm.
"The infuriated soldiers then thrashed the eight policemen and also ransacked the Gund police station", the police said.
Two of the policemen have been grievously injured, the sources said.
The incident took place allegedly after a team of armymen in civilian clothes, returning from the Amarnath Yatra on Friday night, was stopped at a barricade in Gund by policemen as no pilgrims were allowed to travel at night. "The matter has been resolved by personal intervention of senior officers.", Kalia said.
The injured policemen have been moved to a hospital and an FIR has been registered against the armymen for attacking a police station and thrashing policemen on duty.
"The army men got down from the vehicles and roughed up the policemen on duty", he added.
"DGP @spvaid has taken up the #Gund Ganderbal incident with Corp Commander who is looking into it and has assured action (sic)", the state police said on Twitter.
"The police party led by ASI Gh Rasool stopped the four vehicles as per the directions. Even police records were also damaged", he said. A defence spokesperson said measures had been taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Former J&K Chief Minister and opposition National Conference working president Omar Abdullah reacted strongly to the incident. However, they were later joined by the army personnel in uniform, he added.
"In this regard case FIR No. 18/2017 U/S 147, 148,307,323, 332, 353,427, 120-B RPC has been registered".
