West Nile virus season is hear.

"This is a great example of the health system taking precautions to protect the public from harmful diseases", said Nigel Turner, Tacoma-Pierce County Department of Health Communicable Disease division director.

Mosquitoes have brought the virus to the county more than a month earlier than they did previous year, said Carrie Brunson, the department's environmental health supervisor. This compares to the first reported case previous year coming in early June.

"West Nile virus cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to people by the bite of an infected mosquito", the statement from the city read.

Between 20 and 25 percent of them will develop a fever, headache, loss of appetite, nausea or a skin rash, he said.

In a news release issued Wednesday, the health department said a mosquito batch that tested positive for the virus, the first this year.

"[The] hot, dry conditions we've been seeing around the rest of IL, which leave small, stagnant pockets of standing water, create ideal breeding sites for the type of mosquito that does carry West Nile virus", said Nirav Shah, IDPH director, in a news release.

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause encephalitis, a brain inflammation.

In Iowa, A middle age man from Ida County tested positive for the virus. Those people may have immunity if bitten by an infected mosquito in the future. Anyone who thinks they may have West Nile virus should see a health care provider.

At least once a week, eliminate the sources of standing water around a home by draining garbage cans, buckets, toys, flowerpots, wading pools, pet dishes, and other objects.

Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn.

Wear a long sleeve shirt, long trousers, and a hat when going into mosquito-infested areas, such as wetlands or woodlands.
