Infamous 86-year-old jewel thief arrested once again Doris Payne

The notorious 86-year-old jewel thief who has stolen about $2 million worth of valuables during her lifetime was back at it again Monday night. Online jail records did not show any bond information, and it wasn't immediately clear whether Payne had an attorney who could comment.

Just past year, Payne was arrested in Dunwoody for trying to lift a $2,000 diamond necklace from Perimeter Mall. She was booked into the City of Chamblee Jail.

Speaking to NBC News via telephone Tuesday, Payne said she forgot to pay for the items after becoming confused, a symptom of the medication she had taken earlier in the day. "We're talking about what an 86-year-old woman needs to survive on a day-to-day basis, food supplies and medical supplies".

But then she was hooked, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said, and studied the cuts and terminologies found in Town and Country magazine to spot especially valuable stones.

Her lawyer, Drew Findling, said: "This is a sharp contrast to all the cases in the past".

Doris Payne's likeness-or, more specifically, her mugshot-has become nationally known over the years as she continues to rack up arrests into her eighth decade.

Based on the police report, a security officer saw Payne pack items from the pharmacy area into her purse and also transfer goods from her cart to a shopping bag and to her purse.

The legend of Payne's alleged thefts has long fascinated the public and media, with countless news stories and a 2013 documentary film, "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne", detailing her feats.

She previously put a $2,000 necklace in her back pocket at a Von Maur department store in Dunwoody, Georgia, and tried to leave the store, according to the police report.

When arrested, Payne was wearing an ankle monitor from her DeKalb County probation on other shoplifting charges from Perimeter Mall.

In 2008, Payne told the Los Angeles Times she stole her first diamond when she was in her 20s and got used to stealing.

Her scheme at jewelry stores was to pose as a wealthy woman that was charming and friendly.

Even the documentary filmmakers might have gotten taken for a ride. "I regret getting caught".
