Minnesota probing Australian woman's fatal shooting by police

Texas: White Former Cop Indicted for Murdering 15-Year-Old Jordan Edwards

Authorities have not released the woman's name and are waiting to notify her relatives in Australia.

Justine Damond had recently relocated to Minneapolis and was reportedly engaged to be married to Don Damond, a businessman, in August. A woman also drew colourful chalk hearts on the driveway where the woman was shot, with the names of people who have been fatally shot by police.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Minnesota called for answers on why the two responding officers failed to turn on their body cameras when they arrived at Damond's home in a quiet, upper-middle-class neighborhood shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The officers' body cameras were turned off at the time of the shooting.

"Peace flowed through her", said neighbor Melinda Barry.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said: "I've asked for the investigation to be expedited to provide transparency and to answer as many questions as quickly as we can".

"The death of Justine is a loss to everyone who knew her", he said. Noor and the other officer, identified by the Star Tribune as 25-year-old Matthew Harrity, have been placed on administrative leave, per standard department policy. "I have a lot of questions about why the body cameras weren't on", she said.

Mr Freeman has not commented on the case except to say that the officers should have switched on their cameras when Ms Damond approached them. "Investigators are attempting to determine whether any video of the incident exists", said the news release. US and Australian media gave her age as 40.

Damond and her fiancé lived in the 5000 block of Washburn, neighbors told the StarTribune.

Miss Ruszczyk was born in Sydney but moved to the USA to be with her partner, who she was due to marry next month, three years ago.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian woman who died in a shooting in Minneapolis.

In a statement given to media in Sydney, family friend Julie Reed said the couple had been due to marry.

Local residents held a vigil over the weekend where hundreds gathered to remember the woman and call for police reform, KSTP reports. Don returned from a business trip on Sunday. According to a law enforcement source, Damond was standing at the driver's side window when Noor opened fire from the passenger seat.
