Commuter complaints few as Penn Station repairs begin

"Lately it's been much longer than today", admitted logistics worker Thomas Fletcher, dashing off the train from Newark and walking at breakneck pace through the station en route to work.

The LIRR is adding train cars to try and serve as many people as possible and is urging riders to switch to subways in Brooklyn and Queens.

New York City rail commuters have gotten through their first morning with modified schedules while Amtrak begins extensive repairs in Penn Station prompted by two recent derailments and other problems. The official New Jersey Transit described this episode as minor derailment in association with the Amtrak officials operating the station and tracks referred this as a "slow speed derailment".

It means those traveling to work from Hoboken and Jersey City will notice an increase in crowd numbers at Path stations. From there, passengers had to take a PATH train, a bus or a ferry to get to NY.

Lex Marshall of Morristown says there's a lot of confusion and too many people gathered in one space.

Service has been stepped up by trains, buses and ferries in anticipation of the busier commute. The rail tunnels under the Hudson River, which connect Manhattan to New Jersey and the rest of the country, are more than 100 years old and were badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy. They'll have to contend with fewer trains during peak periods, the result of track closures in Penn Station.

PATH is cross honoring NJ TRANSIT ticket holders and will have trains running every five minutes during the morning and evening commute.

And if you're one of those commuters, you also know that things were not ideal before today's track repairs began.

The work is scheduled to last through the end of August.

The New York City subway system is under a state-of-emergency order.

Perhaps because the disruptions were so long planned, commuters had time to make contingency plans and nearly everyone AFP spoke to Monday said their journey had not been as bad as they had expecting.

The nightmare has begun for commuters traveling in and out of America's busiest train station.
