Uran took victory in a photo finish ahead of Warren Barguil, one final twist of drama on a day that will live long in Tour history.

Australian Richie Porte is out of the Tour de France after he crashed heavily during a high-speed descent during the ninth stage on Sunday.

Froome suffered a mechanical problem on the Mont du Chat, the last of three hors categorie climbs on the day, and as the three-time Tour victor was calling for the team vehicle Aru attacked in a clear breach of cycling's protocol.

He won stage one of this year's race and wore the leader's yellow jersey until Froome took it after stage five. He careered across the road and clattered into Ireland's Dan Martin, bringing the two crashing.

Thomas's departure from the 2017 Tour de France will be a big blow to defending champion Chris Froome, who would have benefited from his teammate's strength in the mountains - both later on Stage 9 and also much later in the race. Porte was stretchered into an ambulance, his race over. He lay motionless on the road for some time being attended to by medics before being taken to hospital, although organisers said he was conscious and speaking.

Welshman Thomas, who was second overall at the start of the stage, has a suspected broken collarbone, according to the Tour's official website.

It's been an unfortunate year for Thomas, who also exited the Giro d'Italia in May following a crash caused by a police motorbike.

However, Porte's BMC sporting director Fabio Baldato insisted the team had come prepared, particularly for the Mont du Chat climb and descent.

"I want to thank the other riders, who did not attack", he added, saying he did not see Aru attacking past him as he raised his arms to ask for assistance. Two-time victor Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) cracked on the last climb and dropped out of contention.
