Trump Meets Mexico's President in Hamburg, Says They Should 'Absolutely' Pay for the Border Wall

Mexico says Trump Pena Nieto meet unlikely to lead to big deals

The Mexican president was supposed to visit in January, but cancelled after Trump continued to insist that Mexico would pay for the border wall.

Pena Nieto, through a translator, said that the meeting will help the two countries continue a "flowing dialogue", in particular "for the security of both nations, especially for our borders".

"Absolutely", was Trump's response.

Following the bilateral meeting, the White House disclosed that both Trump and Nieto had discussed a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and "regional challenges, including drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and the crisis in Venezuela". "It was not subject of the conversation".

The two did not discuss the border wall privately, according to Nieto's spokesman.

Trump first met Pena Nieto in August 2016 when he was still a presidential candidate.

Now, the question becomes: "Does Trump really have a plan to squeeze the Pesos out of Mexico, or is this just bluster created to put pressure on the Mexican government in other negotiations?" People have debated whether he meant "there's no way" Mexico could pay for such a massive project, or if he was saying "there's no way" they would, but the gist is the same.

In their Hamburg encounter Friday, before the comment about the wall, both presidents delivered statements with Trump hailing the "successful day" at the G20 so far.

Trump maintains that he will build the border wall to keep drugs and criminals out of the US _ although those plans still remain unclear. He did so sitting right next to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. "He didn't. Trump is a bully, but Pena Nieto is a coward".

Since his election, every once in a while, Trump still makes perfunctory remarks about building the wall, but he has bigger fish to fry, namely trying to get his execrable health plan passed and dealing with all the Russia-related scandals.
