Trump says he is under investigation for firing James Comey

Mr Trump did not identify "the man" but appeared to be questioning the integrity of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No 2 official who appointed Mr Mueller on May 17, supervises the probe and wrote a memo to Mr Trump critical of Mr Comey that preceded Mr Comey's firing.

Still, since Trump fired the former FBI director, James Comey, who was overseeing the Russian Federation probe little more than a month ago, the White House comments have stirred concern among members of Congress that Mueller might get the same treatment if the investigation goes against the president.

Rosenstein also appointed Robert Mueller to investigate ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

ABC notes that, at this point, Rosenstein has "privately acknowledged" that he might eventually be called at a witness in the investigation, largely because he penned the memo that led to former FBI Director James Comey's firing. The White House confirmed that Mr. Mueller was among the candidates Mr. Trump interviewed for the Federal Bureau of Investigation post. The questions included whether he had confidence in Rosenstein, whether he plans to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and how he knows he's under investigation by the FBI.

Vice President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

The White House had confirmed that Mr Mueller was among the candidates Mr Trump interviewed to replace Mr Comey.

Earlier this week United States media reported that Mr Mueller was investigating the president for possible obstruction of justice.

Aides said that the President had chose to take matters into his own hands and believed he was his own best defender in the escalating crisis surrounding the White House. "Nice", Trump wrote in his first tweet.

US President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Friday to insist that despite months of investigating, no proof has emerged that he colluded with Russian Federation to tilt the 2016 presidential election in his favour. If Trump is found guilty of obstruction of justice, that would likely be grounds for impeachment. Trump tweets. Echoing tweets from Thursday, he concludes by adding: "Witch Hunt".

What is clear is that he could order the Justice Department to axe Mr Mueller, which may result in Mr Rosenstein's departure and would certainly intensify the uproar over the investigation.

Mr Comey gave evidence last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

The memo, which was obtained by the New York Times and Politico, says former transition team members "have a duty to preserve any physical and electronic records that may be related in any way to the subject matter of the pending investigations".

The Trump International Hotel, which opened last fall just down the street from the White House, took in revenue of about $20 million.
