Venture capitalist David Bonderman resigned from Uber's board of directors on Tuesday, after apologizing for making a sexist remark during an all-staff meeting earlier in the day about reforming the company's culture.
After fellow board member Arianna Huffington said the presence of a woman on the board was likely to attract other females, Bonderman remarked that it actually meant "more talking", according to a person who heard the exchange. "There's a lot of data that shows that when there is one woman on the board it's much more likely that there will be a second woman". Huffington responded with a laugh.
The comment from private-equity billionaire David Bonderman ironically came in the opening minutes of an all-hands meeting at the San Francisco headquarters to address matters of. I need to hold myself to the same standards that we're asking Uber to adopt.
Huffington released a statement to the Times, insisting she supported Bonderman's decision to step down.
Now it's worth mentioning that the company recently hired two female executives: Apple Music's head of marketing Bozoma Saint John as chief brand officer and Harvard Business School professor Frances Frei as senior vice president for leadership and strategy.
Bonderman definitely made the best choice for Uber, which needs to show that it can take the drastic steps necessary to change its culture right now. The report was commissioned after a former Uber engineer published a viral blog post containing allegations of widespread sexual harassment and gender discrimination, as well as the institutional failures to handle such matters.
"We have been joined on the board by an incredible leader who also happens to be a woman", Huffington said in front of an audience of most of Uber's staff.
