SS Khaplang chief of the NSCN group
Guwahati:Shangwang Shangyung Khaplang, the chairman of the underground Naga rebel group Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Khaplang) or NSCN (K), died on Friday evening due to prolonged illness. This led to Khaplang's soldiers chasing out the Indian Nagas from Myanmar. Khaplang was known as the scourge of security forces and his death is a NSCN (K) who had carried out some deadly attack against India n Army in the recent past.
SS Khaplang will be replaced by Khango Konyak as new chairman of NSCN (K), sources said.
Subsequently, the government has snapped the dialogue and in September 2015, the NSCN-K was declared as an unlawful organisation for five years.
Pointing out that Khaplang was the pillar of the insurgency thriving from Myanmar, security sources said that Khaplang has created a command area on both side the worldwide border.
Konyak, who held the rank of "lieutenant general" in the Naga Army, was elected as vice chairman of NSCN (K) in May 2011.
The powerful rebel leader had two homes - one in China's Yunan province and another in Myanmar.
The tone of Muivah's condolence message indicated Khaplang's death could open the doors for unification of the Nagas.
Khaplang, chief of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland who has changed the face of insurgency in the North East, died in the hospital in Burma.
While referring to the government sources media reports said that the ailing leader had died of diabetes-related complications.
Rijiju said that NSCN-K is a banned organisation and the Centre had banned the organisation by issuing special notification in 2015.
The June 7 attack on the Indian Army in the state's Monday district was carried out by his group.
The National Investigation Agency had filed a chargesheet against Khaplang and announced a reward of Rs 7 lakh on him and even sent a detailed dossier on him to Myanmar through diplomatic channels.
"We will always treasure and cherish his commitment to do what the upcoming Naga generation wants as the Naga national movement is for the well being of future Naga generation who should live in dignity and peace", he said in his condolence message.
