Apple Introduces New "Do Not Disturb while Driving" Feature for iPhone

11 June 2017, 09:26 | Shelley Chandler

iPhone maker Apple Inc.is trying to curtail distracted driving with a new feature that blocks texts and other news alerts on your phone while you're at the wheel.

Nissan plans to stop distracted drivers with tech from the Victorian era.

"We're pleased that at last millions of drivers that use an Apple iPhone are about to be able to put an end to intrusive notifications while they're behind the wheel".

Apple are expected to release their iOS 11 OS some time in September along with their new iPhone 8 handsets, this has not been confirmed by Apple, all they have said is that the update will land this fall.

At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference held on Monday, June 5, the company shared that iOS 11 would include a Do Not Disturb While Driving mode. "When you are driving you don't need to be responding to these kind of messages".

Meanwhile, the iOS 11 update will improve digital assistant Siri's voice and language capabilities with the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

According to the document, applications will now be able to use the chip to "read tags to give users more information about their physical environment and the real-world objects in it". Geskin also posted schematic images that purport to show the design of the new iPhone.

In a counter argument, many critics assert that the Do Not Disturb While Driving mode won't serve its goal as a user can easily disable the feature. For instance, one can indicate to the device that they are the passenger, which will override the feature and enable one to use the iPhone. Interestingly enough, Apple has fixed an oversight by Microsoft, allowing users to simply share access on a per-person basis rather than blanket share to everyone on their contact list automatically.

The all-new feature is called "Do Not Disturb While Driving", and is part of the latest iPhone iOS 11 software upgrade.
