Sebastian Vettel said he surprised himself by claiming victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, having overcut Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen to do so.

"I knew that if I have any chance that might be it until I get the call because Valtteri was on fresh tires so it's likely that he will go quicker, so I just tried to push as hard as I can and wait for the call to box".

Hamilton had started 13th after a nightmare in qualifying, with the Briton unable to get his car's tyres performing in the requisite window while Ferrari looked suddenly in a league of their own. The Finn returned to the track in backmarker traffic and lost time to Vettel, who Ferrari kept out on track at the front of the field in clear air. But it is how it goes sometimes: we go to the next race and try to do better.

"The team got a one-two, which is great for the team, but the rest - until we have meetings and we can see all the graphs I don't know". I am going to the factory this week.

"We still came away from here with some points. One of those days we should have had a bit more".

So will Mercedes now have to follow suit, by making it equally clear that Valtteri Bottas' is Hamilton's wing-man?

Hamilton, who hosted a star-studded party here at the principality on Sunday evening, was remarkably upbeat after his disappointing performance at the most famous race on the Formula One calendar.

Indeed his victory in Spain earlier this month has been sandwiched by a distant fourth-place finish in Russian Federation and now seventh in Monte Carlo, too. This will now be the focus of his attention when returning to the UK.

"I still believe we can win this thing". "Montreal has been a great hunting ground for me in the past and I plan for it to continue. We will have a fun night and we have enough time to prepare for Canada".

When asked for his view on Ferrari's strategy, Wolff said: "It wasn't clear how the tyre would perform". "Our target is that this is the worst race of the season", he said. He dropped to the second place after changing of tires, but as we said some saw a conspiracy in this situation.

Victory for Vettel marks the Ferrari driver's third win in the six races held so far. The team principal, Maurizio Arrivabene, stated that Raikkonen's stop had been taken as planned and the Finn had been unfortunate to lose time behind a backmarker.

Hamilton said: "Common sense is of course I can not afford another weekend like this at the going rate when the Ferraris are quick; of course not". He did not rule it out later in the season, though. "Valtteri has been doing a great job and I don't now feel we have to favour one or the other".

"Ferrari seems to work everywhere, so these next 14 races will be very very hard", he said. "They are pushing everything to make sure Sebastian will maximise on all of his weekends".
