Julian Edelamn close to extension let's guess his deal

The Patriots have agreed to a contract extension with wide receiver Julian Edelman, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

New England acquired two-time 1,000-yard receiver Brandin Cooks through a trade with New Orleans this offseason, and still have Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, and Danny Amendola returning in 2017. Specific details regarding the structure of the new contract aren't immediately available, but Edelman will be inked in as a Patriot for the next few years. Edelman has been with the team his entire career, notching 98 receptions and 1,103 yards in the 2016 season and helping the Patriots win Super Bowl LI.

It was initially reported earlier in the day on Thursday that the two sides had been working on a new contract extension and were nearing an agreement.

With starting quarterback Tom Brady getting up their in age, getting the ball out quickly is immensely important for the Patriots passing game.

The biggest thing for Edelman and the new deal is the $9 million guaranteed.

Julian Edelman was scheduled to be a free agent after this season, but it appears that won't be the case.

Being signed through 2019 now guarantees he has reasonable salaries for 2018 and 2019 - even if he doesn't hit some of the incentives to push it to $7.5 million per year. The Patriots are looking to get that situation all taken care of before Edelman can even sniff free agency.
