Trump to propose privatizing air traffic control

President Donald Trump speaks during the Ford's Theatre Annual Gala at the Ford's Theatre in Washington Sunday

"We will launch this air travel revolution by modernizing the outdated system of air traffic control".

President Donald Trump outlined a plan on Monday to privatize the US air traffic control system to modernize it and lower flying costs, but his proposal drew immediate criticism from Democrats who said it would hand control of a key asset to special interests and big airlines.

Steinberg admits that while the current ATC system is older and not always ideal, it keeps air travelers safe through some of the world's most complex air corridors in the U.S.

"Delta makes a pretty convincing case for the costs for other systems in the world have been rising more dramatically than the FAA's operating costs have been rising", said Simmons, who does not think the system should be privatized. He concludes: "The proposal to create a separate, non-government air traffic control service provider is a step in a process that needs to involve all users of the airspace system and deliver benefits to the system as a whole".

The concern is that major airlines, which would generate the most user fees, would use their pull in the organization overseeing air traffic control services to direct funds to hub airports that would benefit the airlines.

Sources who spoke to NBC Bay Area said the plan could help provide a more reliable funding source for air traffic control but worry almost one-third of the country's certified controllers could opt to retire with little warning if they don't like what they see.

Donald Trump said Americans live in a modern age but our air traffic control system is stuck in the past.

The D.C. -based National Air Traffic Controllers Association had supported Shuster's bill and says it will review the expected legislation to evaluate how it would affect its workforce. The new entity would be governed by a board of directors, including representatives for airlines, unions, airports and others.

Trump announced principles for converting air-traffic control into a nonprofit.

"We are not yet convinced that this proposal is best for smaller airports like MHT", Malafronte said in an email.

President Trump's push to move the Federal Aviation Administration's 14,000 air traffic controllers to a private entity at "no cost" has left aviation groups with more questions than answers.

"We've attempted to take things that are controversial out of the FAA reauthorization", he told reporters Tuesday.

But winning congressional approval could prove hard. Sen. "They maintain the highest levels of safety, but now they're running their systems much more efficiently and investing dollars more wisely".

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao will have an opportunity to sell skeptical lawmakers on Trump's air traffic control vision when she testifies in front of Senate and House panels this week.

Airlines in the USA have campaigned to separate the FAA. and ATC for two decades, but the proposal still has to pass muster with Democrats. "The idea that we would take the safest system in the world and the most complicated, and suddenly privatize it, that's insane", he said.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California pointed to past opposition from both parties to privatization plans, saying it would "hand control of one of our nation's most important public assets to special interests and the big airlines".
