Queensland police officer shot dead, gunman on the run

Police have declared an emergency situation in the Lockyer Valley

Maddison allegedly opened fire at Forte, his partner also sustained injuries while trying to escape the bullets, losing control of their patrol vehicle which caused it to roll.

Police could not confirm the identity of the victim but say they were responding an incident in the region.

Police overnight were negotiating with a gunman holed up in a farm house.

Sne Const Forte's death came after a police pursuit involving Maddison on Tuesday afternoon.

"At that point in time, he has fired at those police".

Earlier today, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the aim was to negotiate with Maddison, who is wanted by police on multiple domestic violence and weapon charges.

Residents were told to run by police as the siege began yesterday afternoon.

Queensland police officer Brett Forte was gunned down after a "wanted man" evaded police in a rural area west of Brisbane.

A siege in Australia involving a man suspected of killing a police officer on Monday has stretched into a second day.

A police source said Maddison got out of his auto during the chase and shot Forte before driving down a dirt road at Seventeen Mile.

Much is often said about the difference in police use of force in the United States and other countries, including Australia.

No other officers were injured during the incident.

Police said Maddison had a lengthy and violent criminal past.

An emergency declaration was declared under the provisions of the Public Safety Preservation Act and an exclusion zone remains in place for the area of Fords Road, Forestry Road West, Sandy Creek Road, Gerard Lane, Seventeen Mile Road, Wellers Road and Forest Road.

It's understood another police vehicle rolled over after the chase resumed and the offender also fired at a police helicopter while entering the farm house.

This was followed by what Mr Lyons described as gunfire that "sounded like a machinegun" and what he thought sounded like pistol shots in return.

"As you would well imagine, the whole family is devastated".

"It is just exceptionally sad".
