The weather service says there could be occasional rain Thursday afternoon and overnight, with a low in the 30s.
The 10-day forecast, which includes Memorial Day weekend, appears to be for dry weather, said Ben Moyer, a meteorologist with the Weather Service.
Several high school graduation ceremonies in the Denver area were postponed due to the storm, KUSA-TV said.
The Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service is predicting Vail could see three to five inches of fresh snow in the daytime hours today, with another two to four inches overnight. Many other locations picked up between two and three feet. Farther south, 36 inches of snow has been reported in Allenspark, Colorado, about 65 miles northwest of Denver.
Arapahoe Basin is the only resort still open in Colorado, and on Instagram countless Colorado skiers have rushed to post photos and videos of all the snow that has dropped.
"This is an interesting storm", Koopmeiners said, adding that it's been hard to predict how much snow - and not rain - will hit certain areas. Meanwhile, Front Range mountains and foothills report up to 30 inches of snow.
The storm was expected to produce an additional 4 to 8 inches in the San Juan Mountains, north of Durango.
Starting early Thursday morning, snow began to fall and blanketed the Estes Valley. A mix of rain, sleet and snow will fall through Friday evening.
