Peace Officer Memorial ceremony held at State Capitol

Fallen police officers to be commemorated at National Memorial Arboretum

"I urge people of Waco to join with the city council, the city staff, and me in honoring and acknowledging the officers who through their courageous deeds, have given their lives during their service to the public", Meek said. The week in which it falls every year - this week for 2017 - is recognized as National Police Week.

Trump directed the Department of Justice earlier this this year to develop a strategy to better prevent violence against law enforcement officers.

At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses, and residents are to fly their US flags at half-staff.

"Just last month we saw officers and thousands of members of the public line the route of the cortege for the funeral of PC Keith Palmer, who was murdered in the terrorist attack on Westminster".

The annual ceremony at the memorial in their honor will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The city of Waco declared this week National Peace Officer Memorial Week for the city.

On Thursday law enforcement from across Wisconsin will be at the Capitol to honor those who were killed in the line of duty. Come out and honor our local men and women in law enforcement, and thank them for their choice to serve. In Detroit, eight police officers have been shot or killed in the line of duty in the past eight months. One of those officers, former Port barre Police Chief David Richard.

I am very thankful for the diligence and service of the law enforcement officers of the 1st District of Tennessee and around the country, and I greatly respect the way they courageously defend our communities.

Family members and uniformed officers representing the fallen officers carried white roses to a table with a flower wreath memorial as their names were announced individually.

"Our rights and liberties, our whole way of life, depend on the courage of the men and women who wear blue".
