Zika Risk May Be Lower for Some Pregnant Women
But, it's not all doom and gloom as this week, Brazil's Ministry for Health have announced that they are seeing a "decrease in cases of Zika and microcephaly throughout the country" which means that the national emergency has ended. Some 7,900 suspected cases of Zika were registered between January and April, a 95 percent drop compared to the same period a year ago, according to the latest epidemiological data.
The Zika virus is associated with a birth defect called microcephaly when contracted by pregnant women.
Panic over the quick spread of the virus deepened as Brazil prepared to host the Olympics in 2016.
In November previous year the WHO had lifted its own worldwide health emergency status for Zika, which can cause babies to be born with microcephaly, or abnormally small heads.
The World Health Organization (WHO) lifted its own global emergency in November, even while saying the virus remained a threat.
It caused more concern when health officials said Zika could also be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. The games were feared to further spread the virus, and countries around the world were reporting increased infections.
In response to the outbreak, Brazil launched a campaign targeted at eradicating mosquitos in the country.
"The Health Ministry and other bodies concerned will continue combating Zika", Adeilson Cavalcante, secretary in charge of health monitoring, said in a statement. People infected with Zika usually suffer mild, flu-like symptoms and recover quickly, while pregnant women can give birth to babies with severe defects.
All three diseases are carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. World Health Organization warned that Zika is "here to stay", even when cases of it fall off, and that fighting the disease will be an ongoing battle.
The threat of Zika virus outbreak is still significant in the USA, especially in southern states.
