State Police Honor Fallen Comrades
Hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the state gathered in London, Ohio, to honor the lives of five of their fellow officers who died previous year.
One officer killed was from the South Jacksonville Police Department. Hundreds of officers from all over the state attended the ceremony at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in London, Ohio.
The 44th Annual Detroit Police Interfaith Memorial Service march will start Wednesday morning at Campus Martius Park and end at Old St. Mary's Church. A caparisoned horse, commonly known as the rider-less horse, was processed in by Deputy Joe Bruno, Commander of the Carson City Sheriff's Mounted Unit.
The procession began with playing of ceremonial bagpipes, with Sacramento Police Department's Interim Chief Brian Louie and Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones following close behind.
Alongside Perez and Sandoval, Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell also spoke in support of law enforcement.
"Trooper Velez's dedication to public service and his family were evident in the words of his son Devin, who said in a tribute to him, and I quote, 'He devoted his whole life to protecting others and to protecting us, '" said Mike DeWine, Ohio Attorney General.
Agency honor guard members will join area musicians in rendering a rifle salute and "Taps" to the memories of those we will honor.
The most recent name added to the wall is Officer Paul Carlisle, who died on December 1, 2015.
They plan to end in Washington, D.C.at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Carson City officers are also remembering Carl Howell, who was shot to death while responding to a domestic violence call in 2015.
The officer's name was not given, but Detroit Police Chief James Craig gave remarks today at the hospital where the officer is being treated. Myron Jarrett and presented the honors to the families of both officers. "Brandon Collins, he was the officer that we lost this past September".
