Earlier this month, Instagram claimed that it has reached 200 million daily active users. It took just four months to add the last 100 million users since hitting 600 million in December, while it took six months to go from 500 million to 600 million, TechCrunch said.

Growth was driven by a number of factors, including the ability to better connect people with their friends, and easier sign up, Instagram said in a statement.

Instagram recapped all its new features including Instagram stories, live video, geo stickers, disappearing messages using 'Instagram Direct', carousel posts and 'Collections' that it has introduced to improve the user experience and engagement. Find us on Facebook too! Instagram has been rolling out new features to become an alternative to Snapchat. A few weeks ago, Instagram updated its messaging service to be more like Snapchat's with unified ephemeral and direct messaging. Facebook boasts 1.8 billion users, which tops social media rivals like Snapchat (375 million) and Twitter (328 million). Instagram Stories were initially inspired by Snapchat's own Snapchat Stories and many industry analysts praised the California-based firm for the aforementioned achievement, claiming that Instagram beat Snapchat at its own game. The photo-sharing service reached 300 million and 400 million users in 2014 and 2015 respectively. In the past two years, Instagram's user base has more than doubled. With Instagram continuing to pursue its rapid growth and development strategies, it's probable the 800 million users mark will be reached before the end of the summer.

Over time, the app withdrew digital frames from its library of filters, while also adding a number of features as it grew. A platform with many users, but without the "advertisers" will not really be a financially viable operation. Snapchat now has over 161 million daily active users.
