Shakopee Schools to Survey 'Health' of School District

L.A. School Board Puts Money And Lobbying Muscle Behind State Bills Drafted To Shackle Charter Schools

The gaps in ASD's charter agreements show how the state-run district was helpless to prevent Gestalt and KIPP from announcing last fall that they would back out of their contracts at the end of this school year. Sarah Angel, managing director of regional advocacy for the California Charter Schools Association, said, "We were thrilled that Senator Mendoza met with charter parents and heard their concerns".

"This is the result of many hours of work by the District Educational Improvement Council, and we want to thank them", said Kim Caddell, director of research, assessment and accountability. Sullivan said the "Charter School tax makes our increase much higher" this year.

Cries of "shame", grunts of disapproval and several sobs from parents, students and parents representing the International Academy of Smyrna followed the school board's decision to close the school. "I am surprised that the board put the needs of the district ahead of the needs of the students".

Hamilton County hasn't raised taxes for schools in 12 years.

Bianca Isom, a parent of two charter school students, said the charter school's nontraditional learning environment created a familial bond among the students and families. "SB 808 leaves local education communities with no recourse but to clog superior courts when hostile school districts blatantly ignore the law in rejection of high-quality public school options being provided by charter public school teachers in a setting chosen by parents as the best fit for their child".

At the same time the Shakopee School District is reviewing how an unanticipated $4.5 million budget deficit came to be, the school board responsible for district oversight is now looking into the overall organizational health of the district. "I don't see why we wouldn't give them a chance", she said during the board's work session Wednesday afternoon. Chastain said the district can not provide more support unless the school were under its jurisdiction, which it is not.

"Even though it wasn't Cobb's job, we provided as much support as we could", he said. The school has a negative net worth of $5.6 million, he said.

Members of the panel questioned Covenant Keepers education board members Noland Buckley and Caron Lott-Dunn about their knowledge of the school, its operations and its finances. The school's board is separate from the City of Fire board.

Pfeffer told Tatum that "it was concerning" that the average experience of teachers on the staff is one year, and that the lack of teaching experience makes sustained academic improvement hard to achieve.

McKenna asked Ratliff how many students she thought the district should lose.

One of the candidates seeking to fill Ratliff's seat, Kelly Gonez, who teaches at a charter middle school in South Los Angeles, said she would not have supported the resolution and she regretted the board's vote. The school has contracted with a special-education teacher at another school to supervise Gober, who is not licensed in special education.

The budget must still be accepted by the full board of education.

The services from the resource center are conditioned on the school selecting new leadership by June 30, Walter said.
