Shah targets opposition for questioning EVMs, says BJP yet to peak

16 April 2017, 02:09 | Shelley Chandler

"Obviously, we have to keep organising public-contact programmes throughout the year", Pathak said. Coming down heavily on the parties questioning the credibility of EVMs used in the recent polls, Shah said the opposition was exploring excuses for their poor performance, which is not healthy politics.

BJP President Amit Shah is scheduled to address the participants during the day whereas Modi will deliver the address during the concluding session on Sunday. "They will meet party workers", Prasad said.

Shah said he will spend 95 days touring the country to meet party leaders and workers and asked senior leaders and union ministers to give 15 days to strengthen the organisation while speaking about its growth prospects in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Odisha.

BJP should win in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and later Karnataka, Shah said. That goal is still far away given the party's strength of just 10 MLAs in the 147-member Assembly. Mr. Shah also said Mr. Modi was the most popular leader in the country since Independence.

"I think it (the BJP meet) will not have any impact on the people of Odisha", he had said. 'Today, the BJP is the largest party (in India) and has occupied 60 per cent of India's political space, ' he said. He accused ruling BJD activists of being behind the incident and said that the party's leaders were anxious over BJP's surge in Odisha. This only will bring BJP's "golden era".

A meeting of BJP office-bearers has started to finalise the agenda of the executive meeting, expected to begin after Modi reaches here later in the afternoon. He said the "government was alive to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir" and that he did not set much score by the comments made by former chief minister of the State and National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah saying that the latter "flip flops from nationalist to quasi-separatist too often".

Defying the security cordon, Modi even got off his vehicle a couple of times, walked to the people waiting for him for hours in the summer sun, greeted them and even shook hands with some of them.

He also offered floral tributes to freedom fighters and illustrious sons of the soil on his way to the Raj Bhavan.

BJP supporters raised slogans of "Modi-Modi" and "Vande Mataram" and some showered flowers on the Prime Minister.

The party will organise door-to-door campaigns from May 26 to May 31 and distribute BJP stickers, flags and pamphlets containing details of the development work done by the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the decisions taken by the Yogi Adityanath dispensation in Uttar Pradesh.
